Marking the third ‘Amrit Snan’ of the Mela, at the break of dawn several seers from across various ‘akharas’ indulged in the holy dip. By 4 am, 16.58 lakh devotees had taken the holy dip, with the Uttar Pradesh government expecting 5 crore devotees on Monday alone.
- The Hindu festival of Basant Panchami is celebrated on the first day of spring and falls on the fifth day of the month of Magha. It kickstarts Holi preparations in India and is a celebration of the goddess Saraswati.
- During the last ‘Amrit Snan’ event on Mauni Amavasya, a stampede caused 30 deaths and left 60 others injured. In light of the tragedy, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has been personally inspecting preparations since Saturday.

Maha Kumbh live: Amrit Snan underway without hitch, over 81 lakh take dip
Millions of devotees from around the world gathered at the Sangam from the crack of dawn on Monday for the third grand 'Amrit Snan' of the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, marking a smooth and peaceful holy dip on Basant Panchami.
The third ‘Amrit Snan’ comes close on the heels the tragic stampede during the previous 'Amrit Snan' on Mauni Amavasya (January 29), which claimed the lives of at least 30 people and left 60 others injured.
Unlike the Mauni Amavasya dip, when overcrowding at the Sangam Nose caused chaos, many devotees this time were seen bathing at various ghats. The Uttar Pradesh government, shaken by the deadly stampede, adopted a "zero errors" approach to ensure a more organised and controlled experience.
By 10 am, over 81.24 lakh devotees had taken dip in the Sangam, the state government said, adding that it expects a footfall of around five crore pilgrims on Monday alone.

BJP MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma slammed Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav, saying that the party “opportunistically waits for incidents to exploit them for political gain”.
Sharma also mentioned that proper arrangements are made in Mahakumbh, and an investigation into the stampede that occurred on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya in Prayagraj is currently underway.
"These people who were waiting for an incident to take place in Mahakumbh so that they can do politics on it...The incident that took place there is unfortunate. Investigation is underway for the same. Over 40 crore people are coming there and the arrangements are very good. The opposition will have to stop doing politics on such incidents...," he said.
